Judging Panel #3!!!! Empty Judging Panel #3!!!!

Post  Sweet_Tyra Tue Jun 23, 2009 5:23 am

Hello Models!!!

This week, we got a bit naughty and grungy with a Couples Shoot and a shoot where you depicted negligent parents who loved to party, at the expense of their babies. The point of this week was to put you out of your comfort zone and see how well you handled working with another person or point of focus in the shot. And may I say, I think you all handled it very well! This was the best week for everyone so far, and you all continue to improve, which is great to see!

Lets start the judging!

CHRIS, you are first!!!

COUPLES:

“Sensual”
Judging Panel #3!!!! Chris-4

Cozy: I gotta say I don't see this as sensual at all. You're using the girl as a prop, and the expression is slightly psychopathic. Sensual should be, obviously, full of senses: touching, smelling, tasting. All I'm getting is arrogance and slight discomfort. If I were you I would have done this shoot horizontally, from a bed or the floor, to give it a more relaxed feel. As it is it's very rigid and posed, like y'all are just waiting for the camera to click so you can run away from each other.
SweetTyra: Its great to see a different emotion from you, something a little softer. It is the first time I have felt a genuine emotion from you, one that isnt acted but just IS. Unfortunately, I dont think its really the RIGHT emotion for the brief that was given to you. Theres kind of this sneaky mischievious boy look in your face, rather than sensuality and love. The hands are wrong, it gives off a controlling vibe. I see "Im holding her coz shes mine!!!" rather than "Im holding her coz I never wanna let her go." It is a great shot, just not what we wanted for youre particular assignment.
Bree: I'm with Lesus on the expression; it's very "Nyuhhh, check it outtt, this chick wants me, dude!" But I'm actually a bit glad, because I thought giving you "sensual" would result in another overacted flared-nostril face. This is very soft and natural, just not sensual. I feel like you should be giving a thumbs'-up to go with your expression. I don't feel like this picture is a step BACK from last week, I think it's good because now you can learn the balance between overracted and not intense enough.
Nigel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqirnqAJ02w Yup. The pose really is just "Walk like an Egyptian". Anyway, I like the fact that you improvised. Instead of using a baby or a crib, you're in a kids' room. I'm not a fan of the expression or the pose. I know that you're trying to show us that you have a cigarette in your hand, but i would have preferred if it was in your mouth instead. Your expression makes you look like you're in pain, and not in a good way. Next time try to be less stiff

PARENT:
Judging Panel #3!!!! Chris-5
Close Up:
Judging Panel #3!!!! Chris5cu

Bree: Props on the outfit choice and the face, but not on the body or the angle. Your legs are turned so extreme to the right that it doesn't look natural - you almost look like a drawing of an Egyptian, with the arms all animated and the legs turned dramatically to the side and the body straight-on. I get that you were trying to go for couture, but this isn't working. Try to experiment some more! I have faith in you!
Cozy: What are you doing? The robot? Oh man I just noticed the cigarette. lol. Well that makes MUCH more sense. In terms of the posing, NO ONE smokes like that. I know when you look at a magazine, you can't really apply reality to every pose, but it SEEMS believable. However ridiculous, editorial poses are made to seem natural and easy. This looks unnatural and forced. I like your clothing choice and the setting, but the angle makes your legs look short. Props on the face though, i like the cool indifference in your eyes, and yay neck!
SweetTyra: I see you have recycled last week's pose lol. Your film was...well, quite boring to be honest. It wasnt BAD, just boring. There was no variety and you didnt really try anything different. You were standing in the same spot using very similar movements. Now, thats fine, because sometimes it is just those tiny little movements that can completely change the effect of the image, but you need to give the client more choice. The eyes lack attitude aswell, you look just a tad scared. Just try to be more relaxed and natural. On the plus side, you continue to improve and you have better control over your face every week, so keep it up
Nigel: Yeah I agree with the other judges. You're being arrogant here when you should have been more loving, in my opinion....and I can't think of anything else to write. Everything has been said already. Work on that

VICTOR, you are next.

COUPLES:

“Passionate”
Judging Panel #3!!!! Victor4

Cozy: I was a little worried about this shoot being slightly creepy, and I gotta say this shot is creeping me out. The extreme direct look into the camera, the lifeless head, and the close crop all make it a tad skin-crawling and, to steal from Bree's criticism of Emma, pornish (i don't wanna know what sort of porn would feature a manikin head). Some people need to follow the briefs more closely, but you need to follow them less literally and pull back a little. Use them as a tool to drive your own fashionable creativity and maybe what we have been accusing you for as "fake" will disappear.
Nigel: This could have been a great picture...if you hadn't overacted again. Dude, you don't have to try that hard. You really do look the part, just standing there wouldn't affect you. You should try not doing really anything next time. If it doesn't work, oh well, but if it does you'll be great. My problem with this is the tension on your lips and neck. You're extending your neck way too much and the pout just makes this so over dramatic. Work with your subtleness.
Bree: Our resident over-poser. I suppose I should be giving you props for posing with a mannequin head and making it look semi-real, but when you're posing with something inanimate, you have to make the connection look real. I think you're focused too much on the camera, like the camera is a third person there. It may feel silly, but you have to be passionate towards that... plastic head. Your expression is okay, but it's a bit too candid. Your eyes are doing this weird half-closed thing and your lips look overly pouty. Good on the creativity, but in terms of the passion, I'm not feeling it.
SweetTyra: I definately get the passion. What I liked about this shot aswell is that I looked straight to you and didnt even realise that was a fake head until closer observation, so you did your job well there. The criticism I have is your framing, and this is a problem you have had before. Its very unusual. It looks like this is a close up of the actual shot, I dont like how wide it is. Im going to disagree with Bree about you looking at the camera. This was supposed to be a threesome, and you werent able to get someone else, so you have sort of made the viewer the third party, which I think is really cool, youve kinda included us in your little threesome of passion lol.

PARENT:

Judging Panel #3!!!! Victor5

Cozy: This was a pretty bold choice. The tipping of the bassinet and the clench of your jaw and fist make this a nearly violent shot, as if the next five seconds would be terribly brutal. As uncomfortable as that is, I can't knock it because that's what you were supposed to accomplish. The clothes are a little 90's, and the pose reminds me of West Side story for some reason, but it's much better than your couples shot. I'm still not seeing a raw, believable emotion though
Bree: You just can't help yourself! You composed your picture really well, but the way you have your shoulders back and your head so far up and your one leg turned out... it just doesn't look natural. I love the way you're interacting with the cradle, but your face looks more like an old crime boss or something than a terrible parent. Think of Analeigh's picture - she was strung-out and completely unaware of how bad a parent she was. You're like, "Meh heh heh heh heh heh!" (that's an evil laugh)
Nigel: Again, this picture had a lot of potential. When I was skimming through the pictures for the first time I was all "hey this picture's cool!", but then I saw the knee and the head thrown back, the over extended neck, the hand. It really is too much. I do like your outfit, the cigarette, the super crib and everything, but there's so much going on with your body. You know what you gotta work on, hopefully, just practice being subtle.
SweetTyra: WOW! I love it. I love how you are taunting the "child", its kinda like "YEEEEH bitch, Im your daddy and I hate you!!", what you are doing is really interesting, it was good to see someone connected to their set. My only criticism is that your head may be pushed a little too far back, but I cant decide whether that really is a bad thing, because I think it adds to the crazy, twisted effect. I want you to completely disregard Bree’s comment about Analeigh (lol sorry Bree). The pictures of inspiration are just a guide, and I don’t expect you to completely mirror that image, I encourage you to put your own spin on it, as long as it works. And here, I think it does work. We are always telling everyone to make their shots interesting and take risks and I agree that this shot has some awkward parts to it, but THAT’S WHAT I LOVE about it! Its probably the most interesting shot weve had this cycle. Well done.

WENDY, youre up!

COUPLES:

“Holding on to Lost Love”
Judging Panel #3!!!! Wendy4

SweetTyra: Your face is PERFECT. I really feel the emotion, you have completely nailed what you were told to do. I cant really say many bad things about this photo except maybe the location. Its not BAD, it just isnt as dynamic as it couldve been.
Bree: I think you could have worked on showing your body a bit more in this picture. You have a kickin' body, and you've cut a lot of it off, so you look short and distorted. A bit more neck would have been great. But I LOVE the face. I genuinely believe that you are upset, determined, and slightly crazy.
Nigel: I'm gonna have to use memory to judge this. I'm not a total fan of your expression in this picture because I know you were doing different things and then when it was time to take the picture, you held back. This is more of a scene rather than a fashion picture. Sure it's intm, but you still have to model. Oh and Mr. Bojangles just died. You wouldn't look like that if Mr. Bojangles died for real for real. You'd be in pain. Like when el pollito muerto wilbert died
Cozy: This photo actually MAKES me sad, but not because it's bad! Everything from the pull of your lip, the clench of your fist, and the hunching behind his shoulder makes this a perfectly believable portrayal of forlorn and despair and denial. However, believable as this may be as an emotive and well acted shot, it still needs a little more of a fashion edge with the pose and your styling. I can picture this as a still from a movie or music video, but not in a magazine. Still, very well done!

PARENT:

Judging Panel #3!!!! Wendy5

Cozy: Yay! All I gotta say is girl, you know how to act! There are some strong emotions coming outta your face, and don't stop. This is just as believable as your couples shot but a billion times more modelesque, and I could definitely see it in a magazine. You look smashed, but not too smashed to work the camera, like a stay at home mom/model trying to work it during a party. I like that you didn't think drunk = distant, you stayed connected with the lens, and that makes this all the more dynamic.
SweetTyra: Through your film, it was hard to pick a photo because I dont think there was one shot where both your face and your body were completely working together. I picked this shot coz you are working those clothes really well. I dont think the face is BAD at all, your eyes are amazing and my only criticism actually is the mouth- a little more tension and not so much of a frown wouldve worked better. You look ashamed rather than apathetic or sassy. But, its still a really good shot overall.
Bree: Well, this picture is the opposite of your couples, for me. The body's awesome - too cool for school! But the face worries me - it looks similar to the emotion in your couples shot, which is not what you want to go for. You should look bad-ass, arrogant, and perhaps a bit strung-out. You look like you've been crying. But I applaud you for the body.
Nigel: You cokewhore. Again, I'm a fan of this as a scene, not as a fashion picture. You're showing off your legs, yeah, but it's not all about the legs. You're what? 5'4? In order to make this more modelly, I would have preferred if you extended your body. Make yourself look taller. And yeah, I agree about the expression. It's more sad than arrogant and, like, I don't look sad when I drink. Why should you? And the same thing happened here. You held back the moment the picture was gonna be taken. Stop doing that

JACK, come on down!

COUPLES:

“Hidden and Forbidden”
Judging Panel #3!!!! Jack4

Bree: Well, I think this is a slight step back from last week but it's not too bad. I've gotten the mood, and the composition is nice because it's not too distracting. But I think there might be a bit too much subtlety. I would like to see a bigger emotion from you. But the more I look at this shot the more I realize how powerful your eyes are, so I ain't mad at you
Nigel: I get where you were going with is, and it would have been super rad...if it was done right. Don't get me wrong, it's a great picture, but we can't really see you, and you're supposed to be stealing the spotlight, in a way. However, you did follow the brief and I get the story, so props for that. Don't start slipping, now.
SweetTyra: WEEYOW! Dude, I hope that isnt your sister lol! And I don’t think you are slipping at all. You are a bit covered BUT my eyes still go straight to you because your eyes are so commanding. Im glad you were a little more subtle in this shot because it complements the situation. I love the passionate tension in the hands, the sneaky little stare. This shot is near perfect, although the framing is not the best, the camera shouldve been lowered slightly so it captured more of the bodies and less of the sky. Or maybe just cropped on the right side a little. But its a great shot, I love how expressive you are.
Cozy: While I do like the boldness of your emotion here, this reminds me of your couture circus shot in that your eyes are rolling back in your head again. The Don Ed Hardy logo on your girl is a bit distracting, but I really believe the tension in your fingers. I am confused about the setting, as it was supposed to be hidden but this looks more like exhibitionism and you're hiding behind the girl. Nice subtle wedding ring though.

PARENT:

Judging Panel #3!!!! Jack5

SweetTyra: Again, great expressive face. I love the attitude, I think a lot of people failed to capture that this week, just make sure you are never over acting too much, it became a bit cheesy and campy in some of your other shots. I know the pose and the body does match the mood of the shoot, but I wouldve liked to have seen something a little bit more fashonable with your body, more solid placements of the legs perhaps, just showing off the clothes a little more. The parent factor isnt exactly obvious in this shot, but it was in others, so just make sure that all the main things you need to cover are in every shot and when you change positions, make sure everything that needs to be seen in seen.
Bree: Bad-ass! You're one of the few who really got the aloof-ness of this shot, so already that puts you at the top of the pack in my eyes. Everyone else is overacting or being really obvious, and you took a slightly different approach. Not sure if the very messy room was your idea or if you just happen to be a terrible housekeeper, but that adds to it. I like this best because it's a combination of fashion and reality. I went to a sketchy high school where a lot of my former peers have since had kids, and yours best captures that.
Nigel: Huzzah! This is what a smack addict looks like. I totally just read a book about heroin, and I can totally picture you doing it. As a junkie picture, this is awesome. This will totally be the cover on my sequel of karasu's novel. You'd be the dealer who denied him the drugs. Anyway, I like the expression. It's smug and cool. Not that big of a fan on the pose though. You're just sitting there, doing drugs, chilling, ignoring your super baby. You need to actually start working harder now that you're at the top, cause people have gone down fast before. Don't let it happen to you.
Cozy: Composition-wise I love the position and nuance of this photo. It makes my eye travel from element to element, and your pose keeps it marginally fashionable. My only complaint is that your face is lost; the eyes are shifty and the angle slightly distorts your features. But you made some very good choices in this shoot. Much better than your couples shot!

LAURA, you are next!

COUPLES:

“Black Widow”
Judging Panel #3!!!! Laura4

SweetTyra: BAM! Theres that confidence we wanted! Im a little worried though that the only time you have passion in your eyes is when you are thinking of killing your brother lol! I really love the set up with the knife in the flowers, I thought it might be too subtle at first coz it took me ages to even notice the knife, but I think that subtlety really makes it work, it wouldnt have been as effective if it was so obvious I dont think. Really sexy and sassy and confident, your best shot yet, well done.
Bree: Hey, why is there an egg in the background? Heh heh. Finally, someone has taken the judges' advice! I think it might be quite a bit overacted, but I really wanted to applaud you for being fierce and confident towards the camera right now. I hope next week you can find the balance between timid and "GRWRAWR!" I love the body language more than anything else in this picture. The face is just going over the edge a little bit... You weren't afraid to "go there," but put some of your pretty back into it. It's possible to get intensity in your eyes without twirking your face so much.
Nigel: You look kinda like that girl Julie from Final Destination 3 in this picture. Awesome! I like the pose, and at first I didn't notice the knife. It really does change the picture. Your expression's great, there's a hint of evilness in it. What I would have liked to see is you using your male model in a different way. Kinda killing him, maybe, instead of him just standing in the background. Other than that, great job!
Cozy: I like your switch of the "knife behind the back" to "victim behind the back." Your eyes are intense and drive the danger through, but the shape of your mouth suggests sensuality, so all in all exactly what we asked for. You are also very good at portraying meaning through the props, placement, and setting of the photo. Well done! If I would nitpick anything it would be the distracting arm behind your head, i wish it was connected with your victim instead of hiding

PARENT:

Judging Panel #3!!!! Laura5-1

Cozy: I'm glad you made it fashionable, but this is the one shot that I would say is too focused on modeling and not enough on acting. You're selling the clothes, shoes, and even the booze, but the emotion of the shot is more aloof than real. Excellent pose, but the light is not falling on your face. I liked your couples shoot better, but this isn't bad.
Bree: This reminds me a bit of the second half of Lucy's party hard/fall harder shot. I wish everyone had been a little more aloof, like they were badass but they didn't care. Jack captured it, Victor captured it a little bit, and you and Chris are kind of almost there. Again, you look a bit scared of the camera, and I'm feeling like you're connected with the bottle of vodka than the baby - like the vodka is a prop and the baby is just background. So it looks more like this was a rough night of drinking and you are really sad, and, OH LOOK A BABY ZOMG!! You've got the munchies for a California cheeseburger. Ahem. Anyway. I know he's your younger brother, but I'd ask our resident crazy-eyes judge to give you some tips in facial fierceness so we don't see your fear in a photo
Nigel: Now here, I like the clothes and pose, but I'm not really digging the super baby there. It's like, it's a picture of a druggie and then someone just put a baby there. I would have really liked a more creative way of using the baby. Next time try to work a bit on creativity. Good job, though.
SweetTyra: I recognise those stairs!!! Your pictures get stronger and stronger every week, but I still feel that there is a little reservation in your face, you always look a little bit scared or timid. You really need to shake that soon and just show us much more confidence and strength. Your face looks a little square, I dont think thats the best angle for you, but those eyes...WOW!

AUDREY, YOU ARE NEXT!

COUPLES:

“Angry”
Judging Panel #3!!!! Audrey4

PARENT:
Judging Panel #3!!!! Audrey5

Bree: I'm just going to give all your critiques in one batch. I get the sense that you at least tried this week, but you still really have absolutely no idea what this competition is about. I think you're an extremely cute girl who probably steals the show when she takes pictures with her friends, but I think that might be all that you are, or maybe it's just all that you have the desire to be. This contest is about so much more than being as cute as you are. You need to commit. You need to get to a really raw place. I mean, before you even start to learn about posing (because you've never really even tried to pose for us yet) you need to learn about tapping into a place of vulnerability. I don't know if maybe you just don't have the emotional maturity to do that, or if it doesn't interest you. I don't think you belong in this competition, and I don't mean that as a personal insult. I simply don't think this is the place for you.
SweetTyra: I think Audrey has a place here, I just don’t think shes fully discovered it yet. You are still learning and I really do have to commend you for trying much harder this week and I know how much you want to improve. The couples shot is a little too acted for my liking, theres not really anyhting fashionable about it, its more like a cheesy snapshot of you and a friend than a fashion picture, the emotion isnt genuine. With the Parent one, I know we had issues with picture size, but looking on from that, I still don’t feel that you are MODELLING, so give us more exaggerated poses next time and give more attitude towards the camera next time, and I know you will just keep on getting better and better!

XANDER, youre up!

COUPLES:

“Angry/Upset”
Judging Panel #3!!!! Xander4

SweetTyra: Your brief was to be a little angry AND upset, but I dont think you really grasped the emotion of a hurt lover. I find that with you, you tend to be an actor rather than a model in your shots. The eyes are good, but overall, it lacks tension and passion and t just looks like you are going through the motions of posing, rather than being IN the moment
Bree: This feels a little bit more like acting than modeling. Graphically, you composed the shot quite well, I think. But the difference between you and Jonny is that Jonny has model ten-shun, you don't. You don't want to overpose (like SOMEBODY we know...) but you could at least straighten yourself up a bit, tense the muscles in your face, etc. You want this to look realistic but NOT like a still from a video - that's the difference between modeling and acting is you're selling something. Next time, think "What am I wearing? How can I make it look good? How can I compliment this scene?" On the other hand... good job Jonny

PARENT:

Judging Panel #3!!!! Xander5

SweetTyra: PSSSST YOU FORGOT GREYSCALE!!! I like the little arrogant stare down towards the baby, this one does tell a story unlike the other, I feel like you are about to throw that little whiny brat out the window haha. You are modelling a little more in this shot, which is good to see, but I would like to see you trying a bit harder, find the balance between you and Chris, experiment with different poses and make it a little more fashion.
Bree: HAH! Okay, I LOVE this shot! It's worrysome what we can't see your eyes though, and yes, we asked it to be greyscale. But the body pose is quite good, you look like you're anti-selling the alcohol and cigarettes. It's comedic as hell, now it needs a fashion injection. Work on opening your body up a bit and giving us eye intensity

Audrey, I was kind of hoping you'd prove me wrong this week, but your couples picture again looks like something taken off your computer. I know it's not, but it just looks that way, in the sense that it doesn't fit the brief...it just looks like you and someone else sitting on a bed singing or something...and your parent picture is so tiny I can't see it, so I'll hold off on giving my opinion on that one.
